5 Reasons Why Choosing Reusable Eco-Friendly Water Bottles May Save the Environment

Landfills across the globe are overfilling with plastic water bottles and other plastic bottles from different types of drinks. We have become accustomed to picking up a bottle of water while we’re out and about and many people buy bottled water by the case. We are paying a heavy price for this convenience, however, since we are destroying our planet in the process and leaving this problem for the next generation to figure out.

Eco-friendly water bottles that are reusable are a simple answer to this problem. While it won’t help the current issue of landfills full to the brim with bottles, it can stop the problem from becoming any worse. If everyone did their part and purchased a portable water purifier bottle, we could stop the steady downpour of bottles from reaching the landfills and the oceans.

A Portable Water Purifier Bottle to the Rescue

It’s estimated that 29 billion disposable bottles of water are sold to Americans every year and that only one of every six gets recycled. When you consider that it takes about 1,000 years for one of these disposable bottles to completely decompose, you can see how big a problem it really is.

A portable water purifier bottle allows you to use tap water and then purify it right away. You don’t have to worry about chemicals or pollutants leaching from the plastic either since you can find these bottles without BPA or any other toxic chemicals. Imagine being able to purify your water wherever you are in the world and not having to stock up again on harmful disposable plastic water bottles.

Quick Facts Regarding the Manufacturing of Disposable Plastic Bottles

Here are some important facts you should know about the plastic bottles we are using on a day-to-day basis. To start with, in order to make a single bottle of water it takes about 3X more water to make it than to fill it. These bottles are made using polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is a petroleum product. There is a lot of fossil fuel being used to create these bottles and to transport them to warehouses and then ultimately to stores.

It’s estimated that 17 million oil barrels are required in the production of these disposable water bottles per year. You’d be able to fill up 1 million cars with fuel every year with this amount of oil. These numbers are incredible and the more people that become aware of them, the more individuals that are likely to switch over to eco-friendly water bottles.

In terms of disposable plastic bottle waste, more than 60 million of these bottles are thrown away each day in the United States. Many of these bottles make their way to landfills while others are simply thrown away in parks, waterways and streets. Each person living in America drinks 30 gallons of bottled water on average per year. This is quite hard to believe especially when you think about the millions of people across the world that simply don’t have access to drinking water that’s clean.

Capturing, Conveying and Treating the Water

It takes a lot of energy to capture the water that is used in these bottles and a lot of fuel required to convey it to where it needs to go. At the bottling plant, the water must also be treated. This does not even take into account the consumption of energy needed to produce these bottles and to fill, seal, label and refrigerate them. In total, the energy that is required to produce bottled water is between 5 and 10 MJ per litre. On the other hand, tap water usually only uses .005 MJ per litre in terms of treatment and the distribution of it.

Plastic Bottles in Our Oceans

It has been estimated that at least 1 million tons of disposable plastic bottles end up in our oceans per year. Forecasts show that by 2050 the amount of plastic found in our seas will be more than the amount of fish living there. Some of the biggest countries that are contributing to this problem include China and the United States.

It is unclear at the moment where all of this plastic is located since the sea is very deep and we can’t see the bottom of it in many areas. We do know that these plastic bottles have started to break apart into fragments due to ocean currents, waves and solar radiation. These are also known as micro-plastics and the amount found in the ocean is difficult to quantify. These micro-plastics are ingested by fish and as a result the entire marine food chain is at risk.

What You Can Do about Disposable Water Bottle Pollution

Now that you know more of the facts about the ongoing environmental issues surrounding bottled water, here are some of the changes you can make to help play a part in correcting the situation.

  1. Quit the water bottle habit – Invest in the best filtered water bottle you can find on the market and start using it regularly. This will not only help the environment but will be better for your health also.
  2. Raise awareness – Let your family and friends know about the impact that bottled water is making on the environment. The more we talk about the issue and spread the word, the less disposable plastic bottles will end up at landfill sites. Encourage others in your workplace to not only stop drinking this water but to implement a complete ban on disposable water bottles.
  3. Recycle – Encourage people that aren’t ready to give up on bottled water to at least recycle their bottles. Incredibly, there are still many people that are not on board with the recycling programs that are running in their regions. The more you speak up about the issue, the more effect you will have on the situation.
